If you’re looking for something cheap & relaxing to do in Jan, then hitting a gallery is the best. I went to the Basquiat exhibition at the end of last year with some friends and couldn’t recommend it enough.
It’s the largest collection that’s been shown in the UK and is only around until the end of the month. If you live in London you will have seen the iconic posters around the tube but it’s so easy to miss the last days.
Walking around the exhibition you will see the evolution of this incredibly original artist. It’s hard not to see how even his earliest work still continues to influence artists of the day. The exhibition tracks Basquiat’s growth from his early experimental work to the last pieces he produced before his untimely death in his 20s.
Highlights for me were his 21st birthday party photos (guests include Madonna swoon) and a letter from Anna Wintour rejecting a submission by him and Andy Warhol (this had us all giggling aloud!)
Lowlights was the overarching presence of Andy Warhol which I found a little seedy. Maybe I’m a little paranoid given the current climate of sex pests but I wondered if he was just a mentor. Also, Basquiat’s early Death was tragic and you can’t escape that terrible tragedy as you walk around this great artist’s work.
It’s getting five star reviews from everyone and, for once, we agree! Enjoy!
